Why is my cat scared of the vacuum?

This big, massive, ugly machine is moving around the house, perhaps even chasing him if you are cleaning up everywhere the cat has been and is retreating to.

I'm not chasing him with the vacuum cleaner.

A vacuum cleaner that keeps going around the furniture and under it may end up lighting up his new hiding place and growl menacingly as it approaches him.

I'm just sucking up pet hair.

From his perspective, it is a loud, terrifyingly big predator -- it even sucks up his fur.

I wonder if the noise scares him.

Some motors do make a growling type noise. Others just seem to be really loud, but their sudden noise and activity make it like a frightening giant.

What can I do about it? I don't want the cat attacking the vacuum, or me while I'm vacuuming for that matter.

For cats, the best thing to do is to expose them to the vacuum cleaner as kittens. Don't put them in a room separate from it but let them explore around it as you clean.

Too late for that.

One option might be to bring the cat into the room, put it on the couch, and let it see you roll in the vacuum. Leave the vacuum there while the cat gets used to it.

Just before hiding under the bed when I turn it on.

When you can, turn it on and leave it on. Let the cat get used to it running, running past it to get his food or to the litter box.

He'll never get used to it.

You don't have to make them be friends, just avoid the cat freaking out when you need to clean up his messes.

And how can I make a freaked out comfortable?

Reward the cat for tolerating the vacuum, like giving him treats for being in the same room with it before rewarding him for sniffing it.

Then what?

Put it near the favorite cuddling spots or litter box and reward the cat for tolerating it there. And have periods where the vacuum runs in another room while someone plays and rewards the cat so it doesn't freak out at the sound of the behemoth.
